Here’s a newwarning from health experts: Sitting is deadly.

Scientists areincreasingly warning that sitting for long periods — even if you alsoexercise regularly — could be bad for your health. And itdoesn’t matter where the sitting takes place — at the office, at school,in the car or before a computer or TV — just the overall number ofhours it occurs. Several studies suggest people who spend most of theirdays sitting are more likely to be fat, have a heart attack or even die.

In an editorialpublished this week in the British Journal of Sports Medicine,Elin Ekblom-Bak of the Swedish School of Sport and HealthSciences suggested that authorities rethink how they define physicalactivity to highlight the dangers of sitting. While health officials haveissued guidelines recommending minimum (很少的) amounts of physical activity, they haven’t suggested peopletry to limit how much time they spend in a seated position.

“After fourhours of sitting, the body starts to send harmful signals,” Ekblom-Baksaid. She explained that genes regulating (调节) the amount ofglucose (葡萄糖) andfat in the body start to shut down. Even for people who exercise, spending longperiods of time sitting at a desk is still harmful. Tim Armstrong, aphysical activity expert at the World Health Organization, said people whoexercise every day — but still spend a lot of time sitting — mightget more benefit if that exercise was spread across the day, rather than justdoing once.

Still, in astudy published last year that tracked more than 17,000 Canadians for about adozen years, researchers found people who sat more had a higher death risk, whether or not they exercised. “We don’t have enough evidence yet to say howmuch sitting is bad,” said Peter Katzmarzyk ofthe Pennington Biomedical Research Center in BatonRouge, who led the Canadian study. ”But it seems the more you can get upand interrupt this sedentary (坐着的) behavior, the better.” Figures from a U.S. survey in2003-2004 found Americans spend more than half their time sitting, from workingat their desks to sitting in cars.

Experts saidmore research is needed to figure out just how much sitting is dangerous, andwhat might be possible to offset those effects. “People shouldkeep exercising because that has a lot of benefits,” Ekblom-Bak said. “Butwhen they’re in the office, they should try to interrupt sitting as often aspossible too,” she said.

Philo Farnsworthwas a man who made it possible for one of the most important communicationdevices — televisionto be created. Philo was born on August 19th, 1906, near Indian Creek in thewestern state of Utah. He attended a very small school near his family’s farm.He did very well in school. He asked his teacher for special help in science. The teacher began helping Philo learn a great deal more than most youngstudents could understand.

One night, Philoread a magazine story about the idea of sending pictures and sound through theair. Anyone with a device that could receive this electronic information couldwatch the pictures and hear the sound. The magazine story said some of theworld’s best scientists were using special machines to try to make a kind ofdevice to send pictures.

14-year-oldPhilo decided these famous scientists were wrong and that mechanical deviceswould never work. He decided that such a device would have to be electronic.Philo knew electrons(电子) could be made to move extremely fast. All he would have to do wasto find a way to make electrons do the work. Very quickly Philo had an idea forsuch a receiver. It would trap light in a container and send the light on aline of electrons. Philo called it “light in a bottle”. Several dayslater, Philo told his teacher about a device that could capture(捕获) pictures. He drew a plan for it,which he gave his teacher. Philo’s drawing seemed very simple, but it clearlyshowed the information needed to build a television. In fact, all televisionequipment today still uses Philo’s early idea. Philo Farnsworth was only 14years old then. He knew no one would listen to a child. Experts say thatprobably only ten scientists in the world at that time could have understoodhis idea.

On September7th, 1927, Philo turned on a device that was the first working televisionreceiver. In another room was the first television camera. Philo had inventedthe special camera tube earlier that year. The image produced on thereceiver was not very clear, but the device worked. In 1930, the United Statesgovernment gave Philo patent documents(专利). These would protect his invention from being copied by others.

53. Before he was 14 years old, ________.

A. Philo had had a very strong interest in science

C. Philo had helped his parents on their family’s farm

D. Philo had formed the idea of sending pictures and sound throughthe air

A. a container sending pictures and sound through the air

B. a receiver that held light and sent it on a line of electrons

C. a light box with a line of electrons in a bottle

D. a way to make electrons send pictures

55. We can infer from the text that Philo’sidea ________.

A. was not recognized at first

B. was only understood by his teacher

C. was turned into a television receiver immediately

D. was widely used in all television equipment in 1927
